Figuring Out Your Values: An Activity

Using the list below, highlight or circle the values that resonate with you. Don’t think too hard about it–select words that feel like a core value to you. If you don’t see words on this list that align with your values, add your own!

After identifying your values, group them together in no more than five groups. The groupings should include similar values that make sense to you.

Next, choose one word within each group that summarizes that grouping. This would serve as a type of “theme” for the grouped words. 

Finally, add a verb to the words so they become actionable items. For example, you might have “Spread joy” or “Always be compassionate.” These five phrases become your core values. You could post your values somewhere that you see them every day as a reminder to live your values.

It might be neat to do this activity again in a few years to see if your values change over time.
